Further information
For a long time, the people of Marseille saw in their coastline only an opportunity to trade with other ports. The districts of the south coast of the Old Port were only marginal places, made of lazarets or ports for fishermen from other regions of the Mediterranean.
It was from the second half of the 19th century that the Marseille coastline really developed. If the north inherits the port, the south concentrates leisure activities: swimming, walking or Sunday trip to the "Cabanon".
The mix of uses and practices developed into an idyllic panorama, where opulent villas and simple houses (called "cabanons") mingle around the beaches and creeks next to Marseille downtown.
